- To be eligible students must be aged 18--22; be declared in a relevant environmental or natural resource science major in college; have a minimum 3.0 GPA; enjoy science; and be passionate about the environment.
- Students are competitively selected from across the U.S. and Puerto RIco. As the Institute is federally funded all applicants are welcomed, although Latino/minority students are especially encouraged to apply given the under-representation of people of color in environmental STEM fields.
- The Institute's major sponsors are the U.S. Forest Service and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, who are seeking top diversity students for internships, jobs, research positions, volunteer opportunities, and more, now and in the future. If selected, NHEC covers all costs (airfare, lodging, meals, more) for students to attend the NM Institute
